Fort Sumter was a structure in South Carolina on Earth which was built in the early 19th century. It is remembered for being the place where the American Civil War began.

Major Robert Anderson commanded it during the siege by Confederacy troops. In 2372, Captain Benjamin Sisko compared the situation Deep Space 9 was facing against the Klingons to the events that took place at Fort Sumter. (DS9 novelization: The Way of the Warrior)
