A fortune cookie is a type of cookie made usually from flour, sugar, vanilla, and sesame seed oil that is baked with a slip of paper inside that contains a brief message, or fortune.

History and specifics[]

Starfleet Officer Gabriel Lorca's family owned a restaurant that produced fortune cookies. He introduced his girlfriend Balayna Ferasini to them while stationed at the Tarsus IV Outpost. (DSC novel: Drastic Measures)

Lorca made it a practice to keep a bowl of these cookies in his ready room. When the USS Discovery returned from the mirror universe, Admiral Katrina Cornwell vaporized a bowl of fortune cookies after learning how the Mirror Lorca had deceived her. (DSC episodes: "Context Is for Kings", "The War Without, The War Within")

Hikaru Sulu had a recipe for making fortune cookies, and also had a knack for his guests randomly selecting the right fortunes. Some of the fortunes were, "Today is a good day to make friends with a Vulcan", "Beware of Klingons bearing gifts", "Save dilithium crystalswarp with a friend", "Learn Klingonese; Today will bring you a diplomatic opportunity not to be missed", and "Travel and Enterprise are in the near future". His cookie recipe was made with eggs, sugar, oil, salt, milk, flour, almond extract, and butter. In the 2260s decade, he shared the recipe with Nurse Christine Chapel, which she adapted for the USS Enterprise's food processors. (TOS reference: Official Cooking Manual)
