Ten Forward → Alternate reality entries (Reply | Watch) |
What is the reasoning for separate Alternate Reality entries for people and places in the new movie? The reason I ask is I noticed there was no information regarding Delta Vega in the new movie, but was unsure if it should just be it's own section of the Delta Vega page or whether it should be started under Delta Vega (alternate reality)? I know there are some things like Vulcan that has the info. on the same page. What should we be using? And are the character pages an exception to this?
I have no recommendations or complains either way. I just want to be consistent. – Lenonn 21:47, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
- It's on a case by case basis dependant on how much information there is to spread around. As a general rule I'd suggest it's common practice to separate characters, and probably ships, while everything else stays combined until it reaches a point where it's more practical to split them up. Ships and characters are more changeable between realities, while planets have still been around for millions of years; species are more or less the same; scientific principles and technology function the same way. So it's only when there's a really major difference, or huge amount of information that we'd need to split them rather than use alternate reality subjections on the "prime" page. --8of5 22:10, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
- Delta Vega is a special consideration -- in the film it is depicted as a planet in the Vulcan system, but in episodic appearances it was a planet far from the Federation, near the edge of the galaxy. The two are not the same world, seems like they just have the same name. -- Captain MKB 23:42, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
Should we add the alternate universe information regarding Jonathan Archer from the new movie? They never stated a first name, just "Admiral Archer", but it is implied to be him. Also, if we add this, should it be a subsection of the Jonathan Archer article, or should we use a separate article, Jonathan Archer (alternate reality)? I know in some cases the info. from the original article is kept up to the point of the timeline divergence for the alternate reality versions of characters. Lenonn 14:41, December 7, 2009 (UTC)
- I've linked to that reference a couple of times as Archer (Admiral), with the intension of making that referenced character a separate page with a background note describing how it is unknown whether the character is Archer himself, a descendant, or another Archer all together. --8of5 17:24, December 7, 2009 (UTC)
- The thing is, as demonstrated with Delta Vega, ST09's use of a familiar name does not necessarily mean that name refers to the same thing. Not only does Scotty not mention a first name, and he also calls Archer "Admiral" rather than "Former President". Rather than attempting to explain why JA would return to active duty following his term of office, and then remain on duty into his 100's, it would make more sense, IMHO, to assume Scotty's Archer is a different man. And, of course, notes can be added to both Jonathan Archer and Archer (Admiral) articles noting the implied connection and linking to one another. (In other words, I agree with 8of5.) --Seventy 17:53, December 7, 2009 (UTC)
