Ten ForwardMemory Alpha (Reply | Watch)

Just looking around Memory Alpha and I noticed this constructive comment about our little wikia. You gotta love em'!

Those friggin non-cannon scumbags ripped our name! Isn't that some sort of infringement? Just thought I'd bring it up...--CaptainCaca 23:23, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

The name "Memory Alpha" comes from something in Star Trek (see Memory Alpha), so it would not be infringement at all. In addition, Memory Beta (by the way, in the future, it would be a good idea to provide a link yourself) is the non-canon Star Trek wiki. That does not make them scumbags. They are covering something we are not, the information from the novels and such. THere is nothing wrong here. --OuroborosCobra 23:31, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

And here is my response.

As a scumbag administrator from "Memory Beta", I must admit that I my heart has been well and truly warmed by the support shown from fellow wikipedians. We are in the selecting a new name from the wiki based on a choice of Memory Beta or Memory Prime. There are two reasons for this (1) we recognise the success that "Memory Alpha" has been, and see our wiki as an extension that features Expanded Universe information, as stated by OuroborosCobra, and (2) both the names have been mentioned both on-screen and in print.
So we are not rip-off merchant's, we are simply complementing the excellent work done here on Memory Alpha. Some users have expressed some concerns about this practise, as several users from MA have come over and called our wiki "quaint" and "less-real". I didn't share these concerns until today. How sad :-(.--The Doctor 00:01, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

I think it's "so quaint" how so many Memory Alpha-devotees a.k.a. Memory-Beta-bashers find the idea that only onscreen adventures are real. That really limits what are favourite Starfleet heroes have done in their lives.--Stripey 11:00, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

I believe Bill Shatner had some appropriate words for "CaptainCaca" and others of his ilk.--Emperorkalan 11:30, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Speaking as a Memory Alpha admin and a fairly long-term contributor there, please don't take comments like Caca's either to heart or as an indication of the sentiments of the majority of MA contributors. He neither speaks for all of us, nor is he more than a very occasional contributor. I, for one, heartily support the name change, and I love the new logo.
I do notice an occasional tendency on MA that, in our semi-rabid attempts to stick to canon information, the impression is made that what is posted on MA is somehow "better" or "more pure" (or... something) than what's written here, which is just plain silly. It's all Trek, and none of it is real (shhhhh... don't tell anyone!), and the non-canon stuff isn't any less Trek than the canon stuff. Anyway... my two cents. Keep up the good work! -- Renegade54 04:11, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
Renegade54: When The Doctor says, "Some users have expressed some concerns about this practise", I believe that he is referring, at least in part, to me. I'm quite proud of the work we do here, and to have douche-baggery such as "CaptainCaca" and others put us down tends to be a mite... irritating.
That being said, your offered olive branch is a welcome one, and I am willing to let by-gones be just that. --Turtletrekker 07:51, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
I find that the people here on Memory Beta are more accommodating than the users on Memory Alpha. I tried to help do some edits over there only to be told to sod off. I know that I made some mistakes as a first time contributor, but no one came on and said, "Hey waitaminnit, you need to do it this way" or "Sorry, but this doesn't conform to our standards, let me show you how to do it right". It was nothing but flaming and mean spirited sarcasm. I like MB much better for the fact that people here want to make it into a community where people work together and welcome newcomers who want to contribute, rather than treat newbies like someone who invaded their home. I appreciate Rengade54's comments though. Glad to see that at least some of us can live in some sort of attempted harmony. Eh, my 2 cents anyway.--Jay 19:23, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
Heh. You were lucky enough to catch us on our good days. If it'd been just after a troll blitz... our "customer service" skills aren't always at their best (as Stripey can attest ;) --Emperorkalan 20:12, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
Howdy, folks. I just want to reiterate what Renegade said above: CaptainCaca's comments do not represent the entire community of Memory Alpha; they merely represent the views of one contributor (who may or may not have been joking, but either way, it was uncalled for). I, for one, have absolutely no problem with the name, and really don't think anyone else does, either. While I do agree there has been somewhat of a "holier-than-thou" attitude at MA (probably even from me on a bad day), we at Memory Alpha respect and appreciate the work that's being done here at Memory Beta. In addition, we encourage anyone and everyone who has something meaningful to contribute at MA to do so; likewise, we will encourage people on MA to contribute to MB if they wish.
To Jay, I apologize for the incident that occurred between you and another MA contributor. Users at MA, particularly those who have contributed to the site for quite some time, tend to get a bit snippy and sarcastic when mistakes are made by new users, having gone through the rounds of guiding new users over and over again. I am the same way at times. Basically, while we do try to help new users, some of us (like the contributor you thought told you to "sod off") have developed their own, um... unique ways of doing it. I agree, it is something we need to work on. That said, please do not think that you and your contributions are not welcome at Memory Alpha. As I stated above, we encourage everyone who wish to make legitimate contributions to do so, and we will try our best to make you feel welcome. --From Andoria with Love 21:17, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
From Andoria with Love,I appreciate that. Really, I do. And I have been eeking out my way on MA, little by little. I know there can be isolated incidents in any forum board or freely editable page, so I understand that sometimes people can get confrontational if they feel violated or threatened by someone who may not care about the look or feel of something they work hard on. And I appreciate the fact that there are some people who are even willing to say, "Yeah, sometimes that happens" as opposed to truning it into some sort of pugilistic flame war about lies and accusations. I'd like to be able to contribute there, and knowing that there are people who do want to help make me feel better about my work on that inforational forum. --Jay 21:20, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
I've only just now read , so I apologize for the late response. In reply, I'd like to say that I do hope to see you editing MA more frequently. I would also like to say that, unfortunately, I don't think we've actually worked a lot on our attitudes much in the last few months – mainly because we haven't really tried (I can't speak for everyone, of course – this is just an observation) – but incidents like that are not very common. All I can say is... we try. :) That said, come on over and contribute as much as you like. The more editors we have, the better... don't let anyone else tell you differently. :) --From Andoria with Love 08:23, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

WEll, there is also the case of throwing the "first stone" so to speak.. i have tried to get into MB numerous times, but its disheartening to see comments like

From Memory Beta:Votes for approval of supplemental images
  • Then maybe we should vote on the Zife image again because including one but not the other is hypocrisy of massive Memory Alpha proportions. It's an artists interpretation, and this wiki used to be flexable enough to include them. Sadly this wiki is resembling the ridiculously ridgid MA more each and every day which can only serve to this wiki's detriment. Stuff like this is the reason I don't go to MA and may soon be the reason I abandon this place as well. --Turtletrekker 14:45, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

I mean, come on, Memory Alpha wasn't part of that discussion. People are just trying to start trouble by making meaningless insults here and there. Grow up, both sides, i'm sick of it. -- Captain M.K.B. 18:05, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
