Memory Beta, non-canon Star Trek Wiki

A friendly reminder regarding spoilers! At present the expanded Trek universe is in a period of major upheaval with the continuations of Discovery and Prodigy, the advent of new eras in gaming with the Star Trek Adventures RPG, Star Trek: Infinite and Star Trek Online, as well as other post-57th Anniversary publications such as the ongoing IDW Star Trek comic and spin-off Star Trek: Defiant. Therefore, please be courteous to other users who may not be aware of current developments by using the {{spoiler}}, {{spoilers}} OR {{majorspoiler}} tags when adding new information from sources less than six months old (even if it is minor info). Ten ForwardNavigation menus (Reply | Watch)

Hey Memory Beta! I was stopping by to read up on Natima Lang (since I just finished Enigma Tales) and I noticed that the top navigation menu is pretty sparse here. I'm a semi-frequent reader but normally use search, I think I only noticed the emptiness because of the new navigation design. In any case, I would like to suggest a small project to determine a navigation structure, to help out the more casual passer-by readers who want to explore the content that way.

MediaWiki:Wiki-navigation has some category magic words set up, but I don't think those have worked as level 1 navigation items for a very long time, and so they don't display at all. Here is my suggestion:

Level 1: Novels, Comics, Games

Level 2:

  • Under Novels, have an item for each live action series, plus Titan, Seekers, DTI. Basically every series that's active. Then a link to Novel to help people find others.
  • Under Comics, have an item for each publisher with the years they were active.
  • Under Games, an item for each current game and then links to the Computer games and RPG categories so people can find the older ones.

Level 3: With what I have suggested, you might not need too many of these. Under Comics, probably links to the various series from each publisher.

What do you think? Just suggestions, of course. But I feel strongly that it's a good idea to build out the navigation a little more. With Discovery on the horizon (plus novel and comic tie-ins!) there are sure to be more first time visitors coming around and we want to make sure they're able to get lost here as we all love to do. -BertH (help forum | blog) 21:56, June 30, 2017 (UTC)

Any thoughts on this? Or any objections if I take a crack at it? I don't want to misuse my staff permissions by just doing it, but if there's no further replies I'll take that as tacit approval. -BertH (help forum | blog) 18:18, July 28, 2017 (UTC)

i'm not sure what youre referring to to be honest. what part of which pages show these menus? -- captainmike Wiki-wordmark 01:07, July 29, 2017 (UTC)

Apologies if I wasn't clear. I am talking about the navigation menus that sit at the top of every page, managed by admins at MediaWiki:Wiki-navigation, seen in this screen shot. Here on Memory Beta it's pretty minimal, with only the Community menu showing alongside the default Explore menu. No links to article pages! Compare to the menus on Memory Alpha. So I've proposed a menu structure that will help readers explore the articles easily. -BertH (help forum | blog) 19:02, July 29, 2017 (UTC)
OasisNav

I added some navigation menus, as you can see (at least if you're using the default skin that all readers see). I did my draft here if anyone is interested. I already had to modify the Books menu from my draft due to the limit of 7 items on level 2 menus, so I may rework that one a little. Regardless, I think it's vital to give people multiple ways to explore the wiki. Plenty of the press around Discovery has mentioned Desperate Hours, the new comic and tie-in content in general and I think there's a great opportunity here to grow the editor base. If anyone has suggestions for improving the navigation, of course make or suggest changes. -BertH (help forum | blog) 15:14, September 26, 2017 (UTC)

Well, if you're gonna expand the submenus in the "Books" section as you did with "Discovery", then you might as well do it for the other series as well. For example, TNG, DS9 and VOY could all have submenus like "(Series) novels" and "(Series) relaunch". - Bell'Orso (talk) 15:33, September 26, 2017 (UTC)
Yes, I was thinking about that too. The novels/relaunch split works for those. For TOS, maybe a general link and then links to a few of the recent banner series like Legacies? What would be a good breakout for TOS? -BertH (help forum | blog) 15:47, September 26, 2017 (UTC)
I hadn't actually given TOS any thought, but for ENT you could do the same as for TNG, DS9 and VOY, except that the "ENT relaunch" link would point to Star Trek: Enterprise (Pocket)#Set after the series. - Bell'Orso (talk) 16:20, September 26, 2017 (UTC)
