Ten Forward → Why is it against the rules to copy text from Memory Alpha? (Reply | Watch) |
I've noticed that some pages have been deleted because they had text copied from Memory Alpha. But why is this not allowed? Both sites are part of the Wikia company so it can't be an copyright issue. NetSpiker (talk) 08:08, July 16, 2016 (UTC)
- It is related to licensing rights. For more information please take a look at our page on Plagiarism. - Nx1701g (talk) 15:55, July 16, 2016 (UTC)
- There are a few answers for this, some technical and some more stylistic.
- Nx1701g is right, the wiki structures were built on different licensing structures. Despite being similar, people who wrote early MA articles did not use the same license as MB. Furthermore, MA, having originally been separate from Wikia, has also restructured its licensing rights at least once in addition to having their URL transferred to Wikia. MB was started on Wikia and uses CC-by-SA license when writing is contributed.
- The less technical and more stylistic answer is that, while the basic POV of MA is duplicated on MB, they have a very structured POV system of production info/background info, retconned info, and the prime, mirror and Kelvin universe POVs. Here at MB, there has never been any desire to retcon anything, and we have a much more varied information base than simple canon. In many ways, we have a different voice because of the varied nature of our sources. We just aren't inteested in carbon-copy writing because it would need a lot of tweaking and we don't have a lot of contributors doing those type of style copyedits. - Captain MKB 16:03, July 16, 2016 (UTC)
This wiki is here for people to contribute. If the best you can do is copy/paste from elsewhere, your contributions are lazy and not welcome.70.69.113.62 05:22, November 5, 2016 (UTC)
- I realize that unregistered users are generally new to the world of wiki editing and therefore might need advice on wiki etiquette -- in this case, it's crass to revive a thread from several months ago, that had been resolved in a friendly and informational manner, and leave an additional response that essentially re-states that same message as a rude comment. -- Captain MKB 01:48, November 6, 2016 (UTC)
