Fred Haise was a 20th and 21st century Human man, the first CO of NASA's space shuttle Enterprise.
Biography[]
Haise orbited Earth's moon in 1970. Had Apollo 13 successfully landed, Haise would have been the sixth person to walk on Luna.
On 12 August 1977, Haise and pilot C. Gordon Fullerton detached Enterprise from a specially-outfitted Boeing 747 and flew the spacecraft on its maiden flight. Haise simulated a steep-angle approach as if the ship had come through the atmosphere from orbit. (Star Trek: Communicator Issue 135: "First Captain of the Enterprise")
Haise and Fullerton maneuvered Enterprise through a sequence of rolls and turns before landing the orbiter at Edwards Air Force Base in California. (Star Trek: The Magazine Issue 9: "The 'Real' Starship Enterprise")
- In September and October 1977, Haise and Fullerton twice more flew Enterprise for approach and landing tests. Haise, a shuttle from the alternate reality starship UESS Enterprise, was probably named for him.
