- This article is about transport ships. You may be looking for the transporter.
A transport is a designation given to starships and vehicles that are assigned to ferry goods, materials and substances from one location to another.
Transports can generally be divided into several types, the large number of these vehicles causes many different names and qualifications to be given across these types of vessels.
Many of these ships also have some capacity for carrying passengers and commonly do so, although the quality of accomodations can vary widely, please see the article on personnel transports for more information.
Types of transports
Freighter
Freighters (also known as cargo transports, cargo carriers or cargo freighters) carry cargo inside their own hulls, in designated spaces called cargo holds or cargo bays. Larger vessels of these classifications are more likely to carry cargo in the form of bulk goods and sealed, standardized containers. In many designs, cargo containers can be docked externally to the main hull, to be undocked and exchanged at each port.

Types of cargo carriers
Types of cargo transports
Fuel transport
Fuel transports (or fuel carriers) are transports specialized to carry fuel containers, which often require more delicate handling and more extensive safety precautions than most bulk cargos.
Tanker
A tanker is a vessel designed to carry large quantities of materials in liquid or slush form, including fuels, foods and beverages.
Types of tankers
Transport tug
Transport tugs carry the interchangeable external container concept further, they are designed to dock externally to large autonomously-operable cargo pods (that have their own registry numbers) and tow the entire assembly to a new destination. (Reference book: Star Fleet Technical Manual)
Types of transport tugs
Tug
Tugs in general include transport tugs, but also include ships designed to tow other large objects (e.g., inoperative ships, small outposts) over long distances. (ST games: Armada and Armada II)
