Couch

Kirk apartment DC Comics

James T. Kirk relaxes on a couch at his San Francisco apartment in 2287.

A couch (also called a sofa) is an upholstered item of furniture suitable for one or more people to sit on. Couches were in common use throughout the Federation, both by Starfleet and Civilians through to at least the 24th century. The Cardassians used couches as well.

The Sigmund booth had a low ceiling, a pink couch, and resembled a human womb. (TOS novel: Vulcan!)

Cardassian Legate Kell long had a couch made of urall hide, but he eventually replaced it with a couch made of keres hide. (TLE novel: The Art of the Impossible)

Chair

A chair is a basic construction that bipedal humanoids use to sit in a resting position. Some species with non-humanoid characteristics use chairs, although some require differing designs of chairs that are incompatible with normal humanoids, like the Deirr of the Deneb system. (TOS - Rihannsu novel: My Enemy, My Ally)

The Tegmenir civilization once acquired a Human chair and made some assumptions of Humanity's nature based on the design. These assumptions were considered rather foolish by members of the Human race. (TOS novel: The Wounded Sky)
