In 2289, Gar'reth fought a pirate duel with Captain Takashi Sukai for leadership over their vessel. Sukai utilized an ancient Japanese katana against Gar'reth's mek'leth, and the battle lasted for almost an hour until Sukai removed Gar'reth's hand, winning the duel.
