Gareth MacNeil was a 23rd century Human man. He served in Starfleet as a communications officer in the 2270s decade.

Biography[]

MacNeil had read about the famous five-year mission of the USS Enterprise and idolized Captain James T. Kirk and Commander Spock. Their missions inspired him to enroll at Starfleet Academy.

In 2272, MacNeil graduated from the Academy and was stationed at Starbase 35. He served there for 18 months, until the V'ger incident in 2273. He then requested a transfer where he could "make a difference" and was assigned to the Federation starship USS Potemkin under the command of Captain Syvar. Syvar described him as a promising officer.

Two days after his transfer, MacNeil met Spock, escorting him from the transporter room to his quarters. Spock noticed the man's awkwardness around him, and MacNeil confessing to a bit of hero worship. Spock shared a personal story about him having been disappointed upon meeting someone he'd greatly admired. (TOS eBook: Shadow of the Machine)
