This page details a counterpart of Gary Mitchell in the Kelvin timeline; for the Gary Mitchell in the primary universe see Gary Mitchell.

Gary Mitchell was a Starfleet officer during the 23rd century of the Kelvin timeline.

Biography

Mitchell scored highest of all USS Enterprise crewmembers in terms of esper, apperception, and Duke-Heidelberg Quotient tests.

Mitchell attended Starfleet Academy as a member of the class of 2257. At the academy, he assisted James T. Kirk with his homework assignments. When Kirk was made captain of the Enterprise in 2258, Kirk's first request was to bring Lee Kelso and Gary Mitchell aboard.

Soon after, Mitchell beat Kirk in a game of three-dimensional chess before Kirk called Kelso and Mitchell to the bridge to relieve an exhausted Hikaru Sulu and Pavel Chekov during the SS Valiant investigation. When the Enterprise attempted to cross the galactic barrier, Gary Mitchell's console exploded, but he remained uninjured. At that time, the effects of the barrier took hold of Mitchell.

Gary Mitchell developed a fast reading ability and ability to absorb knowledge, along with telekinesis and increased strength. Spock performed a mind meld with the sedated Mitchell and determined that Mitchell had "no consciousness" and "no sentience of any kind". The apparent mutation showed as his eyes turned totally black, then opaque, then to a cloudy blue color. Kirk ordered the senior staff not to discuss the situation with the other Enterprise crew members and for Leonard McCoy to keep him informed about Mitchell's status.

Eventually Spock recommended leaving Mitchell on Delta Vega I or killing Mitchell before the Enterprise met the Valiant's fate.

Mitchell refused to be stranded on Delta Vega and blasted Kirk with energy from his hands, but was knocked out by McCoy with a sedative. Kirk, Spock, Montgomery Scott, Kelso and the unconscious Mitchell were beamed down to Mineral Processing Facility DSE-Grissom on Delta Vega, where Kirk placed Mitchell behind a force field in the crew quarters. Mitchell revived, walked out through the force field and stunned Kirk and Spock with the energy from his hands. Mitchell then encountered Kelso, who pulled a phaser on him, but Mitchell forced his former friend to shoot and kill himself with the phaser.

Kirk confronted Mitchell in the rocky wilderness of Delta Vega, where Mitchell claimed to have become a god. He deflected a phaser rifle blast with his hands, and further demonstrated his powers by transforming the landscape around them into scenes from Kirk's earlier life. Returning the landscape to its original state, Mitchell promised to bury Kirk after taking over his ship. He forced Kirk to kneel before him and beg forgiveness for his failure and his humanity. However, as Kirk did so, Spock approached Mitchell from behind and administered the Vulcan nerve pinch. Ordering Spock to stand back, Kirk levelled the rifle at the fallen Mitchell, but was shocked when Mitchell opened his eyes, which had briefly returned to normal. Mitchell urged his friend to kill him before the mutation returned. As one of Mitchell's eyes started to glow again, Kirk shot and killed him. Mitchell was subsequently buried in space. (TOS - 1st story arc comics: "Part 1", "Part 2")

Creating a quantum storm

Mitchell, somehow survived and created a quantum storm that brought in Kirks, their crews and Enterprises from Parallel universe together. Mitchell then spoke to Kirk who was trapped in a universe where the augments won the Eugenics Wars. Kirk thought Mitchell was Q, but Mitchell told him that the Q Continuum was just a "candle".(TOS - Boldly Go - IDIC comics: "Part 1", "Part 3")
