Thomas Eugene "Gene" DeWeese (31 January, 1934 – 19 March, 2012) was an author of several Star Trek novels featuring the crews of Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation. His first novel was released in 1987, while his latest was released in 2005.
Biography[]
The first book by DeWeese, Chain of Attack, was unusual in that it was a sequel to a book by another author, The Abode of Life by Lee Correy (pseudonym of G. Harry Stine). Later editorial rules in the Pocket Books series did not allow for individual authors or groups of authors to build on each others' work in after-the-fact collaborations, without preliminary permissions from the licensing department at Paramount Pictures.
As with Stine, DeWeese wrote with a touch of "hard science fiction", that is with detailed technical annotations of modern science such as astronomy terminology and measurements used in "real" space travel technology, owing to his experience doing technical writing for NASA.
Nearly all of the DeWeese cycle of Star Trek novels dealt with artifacts of ancient and more advanced civilizations such as portals and long-distance transporters. Although there were many different permutations, it could be argued that almost all the books were connected in this way.
The final Gene DeWeese Star Trek story, Engines of Destiny was released in 2005 after having been accidentally shelved for many years. The story, a followup to Generations, had been submitted and advanced to editorial approvals almost a decade earlier, but changes in the editorial staff caused the story to be forgotten.[citation needed]
DeWeese, uncredited, was involved in the controversial rewrite of TOS novel: Probe, which had originally been a manuscript of Margaret Wander Bonanno titled Music of the Spheres. Bonanno remained credited on the final version, but has disavowed authorship of the volume.
