Genetics Research Station 17 was a 23rd century Federation genetic engineering laboratory outpost on Aleph III.

The facility was built on a 100 meter-high hill in rough terrain. Magnetic ores blocked communications and transporters, requiring the installation of shuttle landing fields in the foothills 1.4 kilometers east and 1.5 kilometers west of the base. As the planet had a thin atmosphere, airlocks were installed at the main entrance and exits for its two vehicle hangars.
The station itself had a ready room for surface operations, sickbay with two biobeds, offices, life support, power generator, mess hall, and quarters for all personnel plus one guest room. Its central operations featured a zoology lab, genetic restructuring lab with a radiation inducer gun, animal pathology lab, and rooms for various experimental animal pens.
Service history[]
In the 2260s, outpost personnel used genetic engineering to create a blue dervish, an herbivore that produces concentrated doses of a natural stimulant, but is much less aggressive than the native tripedal red dervish. They also studied native animals such as the hummer, blade barnacle, and the false tribble, a mammal similar to a tribble but with razor-sharp fibrous fur. In 2270, the Federation decided to close down the base, and sent the USS Enterprise to evacuate personnel and data from the station. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek IV Sourcebook Update)
Jones landed his cargo ship Chameleon and brought supplies to station personnel with his type KEF-82-class grav carrier vehicle.
During Jones's visit, the Enterprise landing party arrived and broke news of the shut down, but overnight a D7-class Klingon battlecruiser under the command of Koloth arrived in orbit on the far side. He had orders to steal the blue dervishes, and led an assault team of four security officers, a medical officer and a genetics specialist.
