In the play Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, written by the Human playwright William Shakespeare in the 17th century on Earth[1], Gertrude was a Human woman who served as the queen of Denmark.

In the year 2381, the rogue artificial intelligence Badgey trapped USS Cerritos officers and visitors in the starship's holodeck. One of the lessons Badgey imparted on four lower decks ensigns included ensuring a truce between the Federation and Klingon Empire by satisfying the Klingon representative F'lstav with a play of Hamlet. When Ensigns Brad Boimler and Beckett Mariner requested help from Carol Freeman, the captain opined that she had been born to play Gertrude. (LD video game: The Badgey Directive)
In the 2400s decade, a version of Gertrude came to life as a Photonic being from a holonovel. Gertrude appeared as an Orion woman and wore a crown. Originating in a Hamlet holonovel code fragment, versions of Gertrude joined Starfleet and other Khitomer Alliance militaries as a duty officer in the operations division, with a specialization as sensor officer.
