Ghioghe was a planet. In 2263, the USS Lydia Sutherland, under the command of Captain James T. Kirk visited the planet on a first contact mission. The mission was a failure when a mistake was made by one of the landing party, and the native species attacked the party and destroyed the Lydia Sutherland. (TOS novel: Enterprise: The First Adventure)
"The Battle of Ghioghe" was studied well into the 24th century. Starfleet Academy cadet Katerina Mueller argued in her Historical Perspectives on Military Tactics class that Kirk's recklessness led to the loss of the Lydia Sutherland, an analysis which impressed her instructor, Admiral Stell. (NF short story: "Performance Appraisal")
