Gilbert and Sullivan were a human musical composition team in the late 19th century. Playwright/lyricist William S. Gilbert and composer Arthur S. Sullivan gained fame for their satirical take on British society during the Victorian era.

(VOY - The Brave and the Bold, Book Two novella: The Third Artifact) USS Enterprise-E officer Data had also performed The Mikado, and Deanna Troi used portions of his performance in 2379 to try to break captured Tezwan General Gyero Minza for information. In 2368, Beverly Crusher produced a production of The Pirates of Penzance, and tried to recruit Geordi La Forge for the part of the Major-General. (TNG episode: "Disaster")
In 2375, Lieutenant Commander Data was to play a role in HMS Pinafore. When he malfunctioned on the Ba'ku planet, Jean-Luc Picard and Worf sang a song from that operetta in order to distract him.
