Gin was an alcoholic Earth spirit flavored with juniper berries. Distilled gin is made by redistilling white grain spirit which has been flavored with juniper berries. Compound gin is made by flavoring neutral grain spirit with juniper berries without redistilling and can be considered a flavored vodka. The common drink "gin and tonics" was once believed to cure everything.

Leonard McCoy and Montgomery Scott included this drink in their "drinking alphabet". (TOS novel: Uhura's Song)

Gin was mixed with quinine water to make gin and tonic. (TNG - Assimilation² comic: "Issue 2")
