Girani Semna was a Bajoran woman who lived in the 24th century. She was a Bajoran Militia surgeon and the main Bajoran doctor serving on Deep Space 9 in the 2370s.

Biography[]

Career history[]

In the year 2374, she asked Jadzia Dax for a casualty report of those who had died aboard the Moon Zephyr. (DS9 short story: "The Devil You Know")

Girani was dismissed from the Infirmary by "Admiral Patrick" in 2375, after she asked too many "stupid questions" about who he and his group were. (DS9 episode: "Chrysalis")

Following a Jem'Hadar attack on DS9 in April of 2376, Girani, Julian Bashir and Simon Tarses worked throughout the day to treat the nearly two-hundred injured people on the station. (DS9 novel: Avatar, Book One) After Bashir himself was attacked, Girani tended to him. (DS9 novel: Avatar, Book Two)

After a fight between several Bajorans and some of the Trager's crew in Quark's in July of that year, Girani and several medical personnel attended to the wounded. She later made a list of some of the Bajorans involved for them to attend anger management counseling with Phillipa Matthias. (DS9 novel: This Gray Spirit)

In August, after Shakaar Edon was fatally shot in the neck while signing Bajor into the United Federation of Planets, Girani officially pronounced him as being deceased. She later performed his autopsy, discovering traces of isoboramine and DNA remarkably similar to that of a Trill symbiont, showing that he had been joined. (DS9 novel: Lesser Evil)

After it was revealed the parasites had returned, Girani briefed the Deep Space 9 crew, as well as Leonard James Akaar, Charivretha zh'Thane, and Akellen Macet, on the parasites and how to detect and stop them. (DS9 novel: Unity)

Later that year, Girani requested reassignment to Bajor when DS9 became an official Starfleet space station. One of her last duties was to perform a physical examination on Elias Vaughn for Starfleet Medical. Vaughn tried to pursuade her to join Starfleet, although Girani felt she would be better remaining in the Militia on Bajor. Her successor was Aylam Edeen. (DS9 novel: Bajor: Fragments and Omens)

In 2385, Girani was invited to Newton Outpost to assist in the study of the shapeshifter USS Nova discovered, but she declined.

In December of that year, Girani did agree to go to Newton Outpost to attend to Odo who had been severely injured by the shapeshifter, later identified as a Jem'Hadar-Ascendant Link. After five weeks of varying treatments, Girani was successful in reviving Odo, (DS9 novel: Ascendance)

Personal life[]

During the Cardassian Occupation, Girani knew several members of the Bajoran Resistance. (DS9 novel: Bajor: Fragments and Omens)

In early 2385, Girani began dating Aroya, and by the year's end, their relationship had grown serious. During her time at Newton Outpost, Girani hated to be away from Aroya, and wasn't allowed to contact her due to the secret nature of the outpost's work. However, she felt that Aroya would understand. (DS9 novel: Ascendance)
