The Goldin Discontinuity was a plasma storm region similar to the Badlands though on a smaller scale. This region of space is near the Vulcan Colonial Protectorate and can be quite beautiful to see. There was worry during the Dominion War that the Dominion would be attempting to create a stable wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant in order to gain reinforcements to win the war which is why the Federation starship USS Enterprise-E under command of Jean-Luc Picard was sent to investigate the region.

Instead, the ship was captured by individuals from the mirror universe who had created a prison camp on an asteroid near the region to serve as their base of operations within the primary universe. (TOS novel: Spectre)

This region was possibly named for Stephen Goldin.
