In the 3060s decade, Lieutenant Commander Kavanagh served as science officer of the starship Yelchin-E. Her assignment was recorded on the ship's black box.
In 3069, Grace kept staying up late to finesse techniques of dilithium recrystallization. She considered this a serious issue for the Federation and wished people listened to her warning. In that year, the Yelchin, located about 1,000 lightyears from the USS Gav'Nor, was destroyed by the Burn when a cataclysmic galaxywide event rendered dilithium inert.
In 3188, a team of people at the former Federation Spaceport Devaloka unlocked the Yelchin black box, recovered by couriers. Commander Michael Burnham, a time-displaced Starfleet officer, learned Kavanagh's name from the personnel file, and later read in the logs about her work on recrystallizing dilithium.
