The Grand Nagus of the Ferengi Alliance is the head of government and head of state for the Ferengi Alliance. The Grand Nagus is generally the richest man in the heavily capitalistic Ferengi society. The Grand Nagus rules the Ferengi Alliance with his vast portfolia from the Chamber of Opportunity in the Tower of Commerce, located in the Ferengi capital, the Sacred Marketplace. Every prominent Ferengi businessman seeks to do business with the Nagus, whose authority is backed by the Ferengi Bill of Opportunities.
Specifics[]
The Grand Nagus lives in the Nagal Residence on Ferenginar. When travelling offworld, the Nagus uses the Ferengi vessel FMS Wealth as his personal transport. (DS9 novel: The 34th Rule, ST - The Fall novel: Revelation and Dust)
Grand Nagi may be installed by, and made to assume office upon the deaths of, their immediate predecessors, and can also be appointed to the position by the Ferengi Commerce Authority, which also reserves the right to remove unstable Nagi from office. A Grand Nagus with little sense for business risks assassination. When a Grand Nagus has been found incapable of discharging the duties of his office, the FCA may appoint an Acting Grand Nagus of the Ferengi Alliance until its Board of Liquidators determine whether or not the Nagus is fit to return to duty. If not, the Board may then appoint a new Grand Nagus. Brunt briefly held the office of Acting Grand Nagus in 2374.
Following the reforms of Grand Nagus Zek, the Grand Nagus serves as the head of the Economic Congress of Advisors, the Ferengi legislature. The Nagus may propose bills before the Congress and may veto or attempt to financially influence the vote, but may not vote directly, and may empower the First Clerk to serve as his proxy when he is away. The first Grand Nagus, according to tradition, was Gint, the Ferengi who brought the ideals of capitalism and greed to the Ferengi and who wrote the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition. (DS9 episode: "Body Parts")
History[]
At some point in the past, the second wife of Grand Nagus Bork fled with profit she had secretly accumulated herself. Bork blamed his sons for failing to stop here, and deprived them of his wealth upon his death. Instead, he invested it in the Tomb of Grand Nagus Bork, a pyramid made from melted latinum mixed with silver. By the year 2372, the Tomb of Grand Nagus Bork was a location of interest on Ferenginar. (Star Trek Adventures module: Alpha Quadrant Sourcebook)
In 2375, Grand Nagus Zek, who was romantically linked to Rom's mother Ishka, appointed Rom his successor as Grand Nagus under the confidence that he would continue the reforms that Zek had begun. Rom still held the office as of 2381. (DS9 episode: "The Dogs of War", ST novel: A Singular Destiny)
After the death of a Grand Nagus, their remains were typically vacuum-desiccated and later sold or auctioned off as collectibles. (DS9 episode: "The Nagus", Decipher RPG module: Worlds)
