Organizers of The Great Starship Race hoped it would engender a reputation like those of the Grand Prix and the Rigel Passage do'Arms events, or even historic sailing vessel races such as the Great Tea Race and America's Cup. (TOS novel: The Great Starship Race)
The 2267 Grand Prix event was celebrated with a parade of competing vessels and a gala dinner for the contestants. The race route traversed the Ultan Nebula. Racers included Cat's Meow, a sleek-looking yacht piloted by Valak Varn, as well as vessels piloted by Aurelian, Caitian, Klingon, and Orion representatives.
