Granulator

Primary granulator beam generator.

The granulator was a 23rd century Klingon weapon of mass destruction capable of destroying a planet.

History and specifications[]

Specifics[]

The weapon was developed at a secret outpost on Seggor in the 2260s decade. A miniature unit was constructed in a research workshop to test the weapon's efficacy against a living person. Three main turrets targeted a metal slab designed for a humanoid test subject.

A full-size generator was constructed underground for powering the directed energy weapon at planetary targets in other star systems. Structurally similar to the miniature unit except pointed upwards, this beam generator stood about 30 feet tall. Energy was released to a weapons battery, which could be raised to the surface and lowered as needed. It fired a deadly, white-colored energy beam.

History[]

In the year 2266, when a landing party from the Federation starship USS Enterprise visited Seggor, crewman Hoskins was kidnapped and strapped to the miniature unit. After being exposed, a lift shaft returned him to the surface. When Captain James T. Kirk touched him, he collapsed into a dust pile. Interestingly, the powder was collected, and the weapon was able to reconstitute him using reverse power.

The weapons battery was test-fired as a demonstration for the Starfleet officers, turning a class F shuttlecraft to dust through its shields. The Klingon in charge pointed out that the granulator had no range limit, then gave Kirk an ultimatum: Surrender Earth or it would be reduced to dust.

Montgomery Scott was able to sabotage the unit, and when it was fired at the Enterprise, it instead blew up the outpost and a dozen square miles surrounding it. (TOS comic: "The Klingon Ultimatum")
