- Star Trek Into Darkness brought back one of the greatest villains of Trek lore: Khan. The movie revealed little of his background, so IDW created a miniseries to fill this space.
- The appearance of Khan shocked audiences as it was a clear departure from the character Star Trek fans were used to. Into Darkness did not provide any explanation to what happened to Khan, and if there was a reason he looked different.
- IDW's miniseries finally answers all the questions regarding this dark-hearted villain who might be more than meets the eye.

- Front cover art is Paul Shipper's painting for Issue 1. The back cover is Khan from Andrew Currie's retailer incentive cover for issue 1. The collection's summary includes art from issue 1 during the trial on page 1, Kirk and Cogley from page 2, and Khan from page 3. It also features an image of Khan proclaiming his name for the first time, from the last page of Issue 2, and a shuttle flying over Starfleet Headquarters from page 1 of Issue 3.
- Other Kelvin timeline movie tie-in comics were reprinted in volumes 1 (Countdown), 6 (Nero), 7 (Star Trek Movie Adaptation), and 81 (Countdown to Darkness).
