- The five-year mission of the USS Enterprise continues with more surprise-packed adventures.
- Following the events of the original TV series, IDW's six-part miniseries explores the fourth year of the Enterprise's famous mission. The story starts right where the final episode, "Turnabout Intruder", ended, with a short log entry by Captain Kirk as the Enterprise goes on to explore strange new worlds and new civilizations.
- Writer David Tischman (Star Trek: TNG: The Space Between) teams up with a group of exceptional artists, including Steve Conley, Leonard O'Grady, and Gordon Purcell, for a series of intriguing and action-packed adventures.

- The front cover was Joe Corroney's cover art for "Issue 1", also used as the cover of the miniseries omnibus. The back cover was Nyota Uhura from Corroney's cover to "Issue 3". Endpapers were Gordon Purcell's illustration of the robot nanny's nursery on Gobi III from "Issue 6", pages 10-11. The title page art was Kelsey Shannon's cover to Focus on... Star Trek. The introduction highlighted panels of the Enterprise near a moon from "Issue 1", page 12, the ship firing phasers from "Issue 1", page 18, and Galileo in the shuttle bay from "Issue 4", page 2. The credits page featured the Enterprise approaching The Strand from "Issue 1", page 2 and Kirk from Steve Conley's cover to "Issue 2".
- The sequel miniseries, Year Four: The Enterprise Experiment, was presented in Graphic Novel Collection, Volume 75.
