Gray Tal (born Gray) was a 32nd century Trill who, in their teen years, became joined to the Trill symbiont named Tal. (DSC episode: "Forget Me Not")
Biography[]
Senna Tal, an admiral in Starfleet, held the Tal symbiont until his death in the year 3187. Gray lived on a generation ship and became a joined Trill when he was joined with Tal. At the time, Gray lived with his companion Adira. Unfortunately, an asteroid collided with their ship in 3188. As Gray lay dying, Adira offered themself to carry the Tal symbiont. (DSC episodes: "People of Earth", "Forget Me Not")
Adira joined the United Earth Defense Force and served as inspector. They were part of Captain Ndoye's boarding party capturing the Starfleet vessel USS Discovery when it visited Earth. After a resolution was found between Captain Saru and Ndoye, Adira remained on the time-displaced 23rd century ship. Adira received personal quarters and was astounded to have Gray manifesting himself to them. (DSC episode: "People of Earth")
Tal contained, buried, the memories of Admiral Tal, and held the coordinates for the new Federation Headquarters. To unlock those memories, the Discovery brought Adira to Trill. Leader Pav rejected the symbiont-carrying Human Adira at first but was convinced this was an opportunity for the Trill people, who had suffered terribly in the Burn and left the Federation. Adira recovered their memories with the help of Commander Michael Burnham and, in a mindscape communion, was accepted by the previous Tal hosts. This was the first time Commander Burnham saw Gray. (DSC episode: "Forget Me Not")
The coordinates provided by Senna's memory allowed Captain Saru to contact Starfleet, and the Discovery arrived at Federation Headquarters. (DSC episode: "Die Trying")
After joining the crew of Discovery, Adira told Paul Stamets that they preferred non-binary pronouns. Adira was growing close to Stamets and his husband Hugh Culber. They accepted Gray's presence despite not being able to see him. (DSC episode: "The Sanctuary")
Inside the holographic environment of the wrecked KSF Khi'eth, Adira manifested with a Xahean appearance, and Gray appeared Vulcan. To everyone's surprise, Saru and Culber were able to see and interact with Gray. After arranging the rescue of the stranded Kelpien Su'Kal, Culber promised Gray they would find a way to return him to corporeality. (DSC episode: "That Hope Is You, Part 2")
Culber was later able to come up with a plan to use the Soong method -- the exact same method that was used to resurrect Jean-Luc Picard following his death -- to resurrect Gray by transferring his consciousness into a golem body. Culber revealed that the procedure was eventually abandoned due to a low success rate following Picard's resurrection. With the help of Guardian Xi performing a zhian'tara via hologram to unjoin Gray's consciousness from Tal, Culber was able to transfer Gray from Tal into the golem, successfully restoring Gray to physical form and resurrecting him. Alternate timelines[]
In an alternate timeline beset by the temporal anomaly crisis, Gray was pulled into the late 24th century. Around the year 2380, different timelines were interwoven, and Gray joined Starfleet to help Q resolve the temporal anomaly crisis. His skills qualified him as musician. He was also skilled in the fields of command and diplomacy. Among the equipment Gray brought to bear in missions were Adira's gift, his outfit, coffee and a novel.
