The greenhouse effect is a phenomenon affecting temperature of an atmosphere.

History and specifics[]

Thiopa[]

The planet Thiopa experienced a greenhouse effect due to a fifty percent increase in carbon dioxide levels. This was caused by the combustion of fossil fuels in energy production and transport vehicles. As a result, the mean temperature rose by 4 degrees Celsius in just 50 years, which is significantly faster than the 22,000 years it took for Thiopa’s last ice age to end. It was projected that by 2415 almost all Thiopan land masses would be uninhabitable by anything more than a small population, condemning Thiopan civilization to a dark age. (TNG novel: Power Hungry)
