In the Cardassian language, gul is an Cardassian officer rank title which, in translation to Federation Standard, is approximately equivalent to a ship's captain of comparable military or naval service organizations, such as Starfleet. The title of gul was in use in the 24th century by the Cardassian Guard agency of the Cardassian Central Command. (TNG episode: "The Wounded"; TLE - Terok Nor novel: Day of the Vipers)
Cardassian guls, in addition to their normal duties as starship commanders, are often expected to entertain guests aboard ship. Guls typically also take a cut of the profits from any cargo their ship might be transporting. (DS9 episode: "Return to Grace")
