"Hearts & Bones" is a Waypoint comic story set in the The Original Series, published in Waypoint Special 2019.
Summary[]
Log entries[]
- Chief medical officer's log, stardate 3498.07.
- The Enterprise is in orbit around Vulcan. It's been one of those days.
McCoy is infatuated with Doctor T'Han, a Vulcan visiting the Enterprise, but he seems unable to connect with her. Frustrated, he shares a bottle of Saurian brandy with James T. Kirk in his quarters after their duty shift.
The next day in sickbay, McCoy and Christine Chapel demonstrate a particular surgical procedure with a Vulcan patient, as T'Han observes and assists. T'Han realizes McCoy is distracted, but he completes the operation successfully. That evening, T'Han attends dinner with Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. During the conversation, Spock says the doctor is ordinarily an excellent surgeon, in case she thought he'd faltered. McCoy is angered by the comment, which confuses T'Han. She thanks them for dinner and heads back to her quarters.
McCoy catches up to her in the corridor and tries to charm her again, but she says she was warned that human emotionalism hindered efficiency, and retires to write her report on the procedure for the Federation Science Council. McCoy asks Spock for advice on how to court Dr. T'Han. Spock recommends that he give up, to spare himself further embarrassment.
