In 2371, Petersen studied the Bajoran wormhole and worked with the crew of Deep Space 9 when the Unclean threatened the Gamma and Alpha Quadrants. (DS9 - Invasion! novel: Time's Enemy)

In 2372, distinguished by her work in applied temporal physics and less than two months out of Starfleet Academy, Ensign Petersen served as science officer aboard the upgraded Soyuz-class USS Bozeman, then attached to the Federation Department of Temporal Investigations for missions requiring Starfleet support.

She found herself lusting after Meyo Ranjea, a male Deltan who worked for Delta's Planetary Security and was on board during a DTI mission around Stardate 49572.0. Luckily, she managed to keep her feelings mostly in check, although she did let slip to Ranjea about the Temporal Cold War during a brief period of uncontrollable loquaciousness.

By 2382, Petersen had been promoted to commander and served as science officer aboard the Nova-class USS Everett, which was also attached to the DTI.
