History and specifics[]
Around the 22nd century, scientists at Heidelberg and Duke University worked with Vulcans to develop a test and rating for extrasensory perception, the Duke-Heidelburg Quotient. (TOS novel: The Higher Frontier)
The university discontinued its fencing instruction for a while, but reinstituted it in the mid 23rd century. (TNG novel: A Rock and a Hard Place)
In 2269, Leonard McCoy and Sara George treated Tram Bit's young son Alt's barbed spear wound with anabolic protoplasers. James T. Kirk asked that they leave the Kyrosian with some sort of scar, as he'd gotten the injury possibly during the teenager's first battle, and might want to retain evidence of it. McCoy recalled injuries such as those renowned from Heidelberg in the old days, and left the boy with a puckered scar to brag about. (TOS novel: Spock, Messiah!)
In the 24th century, Quintin Stone's father taught fencing at Heidelberg University. As a kid, Stone ended up with a fencing scar himself while watching a match between his father and a student who inadvertently stabbed his father through the neck. When the student withdrew the weapon, it accidentally struck Stone's face. (TNG novel: A Rock and a Hard Place)
In the 24th century, Katerina Mueller attended Heidelberg University and got a fencing scar on the left side of her face while not wearing a face mask during an exercise, though she won the engagement. She told Mackenzie Calhoun she considered the scar to be a badge of honor. (NF - The Captain's Table novel: Once Burned)
Ever since she attended the university, Mueller carried a hidden stiletto in the top of her boot. (NF novel: Treason)
