A helicopter probe was an unnumbered, unnamed type of Federation probe in use during the mid-23rd century.
History and specifics[]
Some Starfleet class F shuttlecraft were outfitted with this probe type, which was made specifically for use within a planet's atmosphere. Using a helicopter blade and four tiny maneuvering thrusters, the spherical device could maneuver up to 100 feet above the shuttle's roof. It was tethered to the shuttle via two thin cables. It had an extremely sensitive, retractable forward sensor.
In 2267, the shuttle Galileo (NCC-1701/1) launched a helicopter probe to gather detailed telemetry of Zar's fortified compound prior to an armed assault. (TOS comic: "The Void of Storms")
