Helm console

The helm console of the USS Enterprise in the late 2260s.

The helm (or helm control) was the flight control console on board a starship or shuttlecraft. It controlled the flight operations of a ship, including warp, impulse and thruster control. On Federation starships, the officer controlling the helm was called the helmsman during the 23rd century; this was changed to flight controller in 24th century which also incorporated some of the duties of the navigator. On most starships helm was located next to the operations station at the front of the bridge.
