In the alternate timeline where Khan Noonien Singh won the Eugenics Wars, a Helot is a conscripted crewperson in the Earthfleet of the Khanate of Earth. Helots had few rights aboard Earthfleet ships, and were generally treated as little more than slaves. Each helot wore a copper torc around their throats, and if there was any sign of insurrection or insubordination then the Princeps could simply activate a control on a remote control key and choke the life out of them.
Members of various alien races subjugated by Earth (including Trills such as Ezri Dax, serving on the starship Defiance) were often pressed into service as Helots. (ST - Myriad Universes novella: Seeds of Dissent)
