The High Master of the Kolinahru, also known as a Kolinahr High Master, was a title that was held by the leader of the order of Kolinahru on the Vulcan.

Overview[]

Among the duties of the High Master in the post-Reformation era was to conduct the "Ritual" for the adherents of the Kolinahr discipline. This was the event where all emotion was purged and severed from the mind of the disciple, and involved a mind meld with the High Master. Prior to this event, students were encouraged to sever all bonds with family and friends before they met with the High Master, dissolved the bonds and attachments in the mind of the student. (TOS novel: Recovery)

Beneath the Monastery, in a large subterranean chamber, was the Hall of Ancient Thought where the katras of the previous members of the Kolinahru resided in vre'katra. Their minds were left undisturbed in fear that they would be most displeased of the modern members of their order. (Last Unicorn RPG module: The Way of Kolinahr: The Vulcans)

History[]

These individuals were incredibly powerful Vulcans who led their fellow mindlords in numerous dark acts that still haunt modern Vulcans. However, their reign of terror ended when the High Master Sanshiin became an adherent of Surak and sought to control their emotions by forming the Kolinahr discipline. After creating the Kolinahru Monastery as a safe haven for their order, Sanshiin and his adepts devoted themselves to logic and the purging of their emotions. (Last Unicorn RPG module: The Way of Kolinahr: The Vulcans)

The Vulcan princess T'Rea after receiving illumination ascended to the position of High Master. However, her heretical beliefs led to her being stripped of the position and becoming the least honored of the High Masters as she was considered an embarrassment to the Kolinahru. (TOS novelization: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier) By the mid-23rd century, T'Sai held the position of High Master of the Kolinahru. (TOS novel: The Lost Years)

The mention of the Hall of Ancient Thought conflicts with sources such as Vulcan's Soul which state that it resided at Mount Seleya, however, a similar hall like the one at Seleya may reside beneath the Monastery.
