Hindenburg roller

A Hindenburg roller.

The Hindenburg roller was an animal species native to Aleph III.

History and specifics[]

It had an oval, gaseous body and abraded scaly skin. When drinking water, it breathed out oxygen and absorbed enough hydrogen to inflate, becoming buoyant enough to roll, but not enough to float. To direct its motion, it propelled the gas through exhaust ports on its skin and out through its mouth. If its skin was punctured, however, the hydrogen within would explode, killing the animal and harming anything nearby.

In the 2260s, Hindenburg rollers could be found near Federation Genetics Research Station 17. Personnel captured eight with special traps.

In 2270, just as the station was being closed down, Captain Koloth led a raiding party to attempt to steal the facility's research notes and specimens. At the time, four Hindenburg rollers were being kept in large animal cages, and four in smaller animal pens, for examination by zoologists Carver Destry and Daniel Lane.
