History and specifics[]

In the 2260s, an epidemic on Earth was fatal to hippos and several other wildlife species. In 2267, the USS Enterprise was assigned to retrieve some hippos from other planets in order to repopulate them on Earth. The crew also brought back members of bear, camel, chimpanzee, kangaroo, leopard, parrot, platypus, rhinoceros, tiger, turtle, and zebra species. (TOS - A Book to Color comic: "Third story")

A pair of striped hippos were rescued from extinction on an unnamed planet threatened by a supernova. (TOS comic: "Space Ark")

In 2270, Kirk recalled having read that George Washington's false teeth were made with ivory from a hippopotamus rather than an elephant. (TOS novel: Savage Trade)

Doctor Leonard McCoy loaded his hypospray with a high enough dosage of mynoquintistrycnite to sedate a Capellan power cat aboard Kukulkan's starship. McCoy commented that it could knock out a herd of hippos. (TAS - Log Six novelization: How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth)
