For the mirror universe counterpart, see Hiren (mirror).

Hiren was a Romulan military officer who eventually became Praetor of the Romulan Star Empire.

Biography[]

In 2281, while holding the rank of Admiral, Hiren demoted Admiral Aventeer Vokar to Sublieutenant after the loss of the vessel Daami. (ST - The Lost Era novel: Serpents Among the Ruins)

By late 2376, following the Watraii affair, Hiren had replaced Neral as Praetor of the Romulan Star Empire. (TOS - Vulcan's Soul novel: Epiphany)

In 2377, Starfleet Captain David Gold contacted Hiren to alert him to the actions of Romulan Commander Tokk, who had crossed the Romulan Neutral Zone in pursuit of a Starfleet shuttlecraft. Hiren personally issued a reproach for this potential violation of the armistice with the United Federation of Planets. (CoE eBook: The Art of the Comeback)

In 2379, Hiren accepted the defection of Starfleet officer Soleta, giving her command of a ship in the Imperial Fleet of the Romulan Star Empire. (NF novel: After the Fall)

Also during 2379, Hiren led a fleet of Romulan vessels that confronted a joint Federation-Klingon armada deep in Romulan territory. The armada had just destroyed Admiral Arai's Tal Shiar headquarters where an operation to destroy the Unity One Starbase and the Federation-Klingon Alliance had been staged. Hiren told Captain Jean-Luc Picard that Arai had been acting without the Romulan Senate's authorization and expected the armada to withdraw now the matter had been resolved. Picard doubted that Hiren had no involvement in the operation, but agreed to leave - but not before telling him that the Federation would be watching the Empire closely in the future. (ST video game: Starfleet Command III)

In October 2379, Hiren refused to agree to allow the Romulan military to make an alliance with Shinzon's forces and be more confrontational with Federation. Hiren was among those assassinated by Senator Tal'Aura on the behalf of Shinzon of Remus, using one of Shinzon's thalaron weapons. Shinzon then succeeded him as praetor. (TNG movie: Star Trek Nemesis; ST reference: The Star Trek Encyclopedia)

He was married to Commander T'Shara, one of the highest ranking members of the military in the 2370s. She died in 2379 during the Celesian campaign, after being accidentally shot by one of her own centurions. (TNG novelization: Star Trek Nemesis)
