Horatio Hornblower (1770-1858) was a fictional Human character featured in 12 novels written in the 20th century by author C.S. Forester of the planet Earth.

The USS Lydia Sutherland was perhaps named after two ships Hornblower commanded, the Lydia and the Sutherland.

History and specifics[]

James T. Kirk enjoyed these novels of high seas adventure. (TOS novel: Starfleet Academy)

He sometimes saw reflections of his personality in the character. (TOS - Worlds Apart novel: The Final Reflection)

In 2270, Lt. Commander Piper once compared herself to Hornblower, who never had to go to the bathroom during a crisis. (TOS - Fortunes of War novel: Battlestations!)

In 2273, Kirk relaxed in his quarters aboard the USS Enterprise with several book-tapes, including a Horatio Hornblower omnibus. (TOS comic: "Aberration on Abaris")

In 2293, Kirk gave Spock a paper copy of a Hornblower novel as a farewell gift to remember him by, before they disembarked at Earth Spacedock from the USS Enterprise-A. Spock appreciated the gift. (TOS novelization: Generations)

Jean-Luc Picard and Data named a holodeck sea-going yacht Hornblower. (TNG novel: I, Q)
