Summary[]

Sato is struggling to adjust to life on Enterprise, not helped by a lack of sleep that sees her constantly end up in sickbay. She is looking after a sphere that a Vulcan gifted to her grandmother, who then passed it on to Hoshi. One night, the sphere hatches into a firebird and Sato experiences the joy and grief of its life cycle.

Phlox explains to her about the creature: It only lives a few moments and the eggs take longer than a lifespan to hatch, needing someone to look after them and show them love. Sato is prepared to help nurture the eggs for future generations, now more comfortable with her life on Enterprise.

Background[]

On pp. 350-351, Malcolm Reed seems to be in charge of Engineering and speaks with Trip Tucker's speech patterns. This is presumably what author Kelle Vozka refers to in Voyages of Imagination (p. 542): "It's ironic that I wrote an Enterprise story, which I thought was safe because it was new, and still got a character mixed up."
