The Hupyrians are a notably tall humanoid species native to Hupyria in the Alpha Quadrant. They had tight skin with wrinkles around their mouths and eyes and a continuously frowning expression. They were members of the Ferengi Alliance. (DS9 episode: "The Nagus", DS9 reference: Legends of the Ferengi)
The government of Hupyria was known as the Hupyrian Autocracy. (ST video game: Infinite)
History and specifics[]
For centuries, conflict was rife among Hupyrians and they became known for their guerrilla warfare tactics. During the reign of Grand Nagus Oblat, the Hupyrian People's Unity Front attempted to seize Oblat's duridium mines as part of their planned liberation of the Hupyrian civilization from the Ferengi. Disturbed he would lose his lucrative mines, Oblat formed the Ferengi/Hupyrian Friendship Brigade. Few Ferengi joined the FHFB until Oblat announced that every recruit would receive a free can of the recently discovered Hupyrian beetle snuff every week. The numbers of FHFB members swelled and the Hupyrian insurrection was halted with high Hupyrian casualties a result. (DS9 reference: Legends of the Ferengi)
Several Hupyrians became servants to influential Ferengi and became well regarded for their devotion to their masters. Hupyrians also take a vow that they will only speak to their masters. Maihar'du was Grand Nagus Zek's servant. Brunt had a Hupyrian servant named Uri'lash. (DS9 episodes: "The Nagus", "Prophet Motive", "Profit and Lace")
In 2376, when Julian Bashir was treating a Hupyrian with a laceration to the scalp he detected a genetic disorder in the species, similar to Human arthritis. He considered a cure for the ailment for some time after, concluding inserting altered nucleonic material into the Hupyrian's pituitary-like gland might be the answer. (DS9 novel: Avatar, Book One)
Alternate timelines[]
In the alternate timeline created by Nero, Hupyrians and the fact of their servitude to the Ferengi were known to the Federation by the 23rd century. James T. Kirk encountered a Hupyrian in San Francisco in 2255. (TOS - Starfleet Academy novel: The Delta Anomaly)
