HyperportTest

The hyperport was a piece of technology created by Wesley Crusher in the year 2366.

History and specifications[]

When Wesley reviewed Iconian technology in the aftermath of the encounter with an Iconian probe in the Romulan Neutral Zone in 2365[1], he perceived some possible applications in improving existing transporter devices. In violation of Starfleet protocol to ignore the advanced and dangerous tech, Wesley created a prototype hyperport transporter and used it to dematerialize and rematerialize a model sailing ship.

Wesley's tests caused a disruption in the USS Enterprise's power grid, and Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge and Data visited his quarters to investigate. At that moment, a humanoid man named Pierce appeared on the hyperport disc.

Pierce claimed to be a time traveller from thirty years hence, and accused Wesley of killing his world. Pierce described that the hyperport caused a disruption in biological matter, creating a pervasive toxicity in all lifeforms using the device. After years of buildup, Captain Wesley Crusher's ship, the USS Santa Maria visited Pierce's homeworld on Rovan IV, releasing disease that decimated his people, including Pierce's son.

Filled with regret, Captain Crusher used the hyperport to send Pierce back in time to the day the device was invented. Unconvinced the Enterprise crew would do the right thing, Pierce released V'Daran fever into the ship's aquifer. The disease ran rampant, killing the crew. In order to avoid this massacre, the prototype hyperport was again used for time travel, this time sending Data back to a time prior to Pierce's arrival. Data was damaged by the transport, and was partially incinerated, but he managed to warn Wesley. The sight of his friend dying convinced Wesley that the device was too dangerous for further development. (TNG - Maelstrom comic: "Forbidden Fruit")
