The IKS Amar (IKC-7736), also known as the IKC Amar, was a Klingon K't'inga-class battle cruiser in service to the Klingon Empire's Klingon Defense Force in the late 23rd century. The Amar was commanded by Captain Barak. (TOS movie, novelization & comic adaptation: Star Trek: The Motion Picture; ST reference: Star Trek Encyclopedia; Decipher RPG module: Starships)
Service history
In the year 2273, the Amar led a squadron of battle cruisers to intercept a mysterious cloud phenomenon crossing Klingon space at high warp, later identified by the crew of the USS Enterprise as V'Ger. The Amar and its fellow ships fired photon torpedoes into the center of the cloud, and were promptly decompiled and converted into pure information by V'Ger's advanced high-energy plasma. (TOS movie, novelization & comic adaptation: Star Trek: The Motion Picture; CCG: The Motion Pictures; Decipher RPG module: Starships; ST reference: Star Trek Encyclopedia)
The Amar squadron became a turning point in Klingon history. The K't'i'nga vessels were fairly new, with capabilities just becoming known to the Federation and Starfleet. The visible loss under the watchful sensors of monitoring station Epsilon 9 made Amar a diplomatic issue, and another trio of the new vessels were sent to Earth under a flag of truce to exchange statements on behalf of the Empire. The loss of Amar led to the second squadron's commander taking an opportunity to test the new vessels in combat with the redesigned Constitution-class Starfleet ships. The politics of the Empire were changing, with the brave crews of these K't'inga squadrons representing a resurgence of the so-called Imperial race in the Klingon government and military, with a number of embarrassments resulting in the purge of all fusion race Klingons from such positions. (TOS novelization: The Motion Picture; TOS comic: "Debt of Honor"; TOS - Untold Voyages comic: "Renewal")
The easy loss of the Amar squadron also caused some doubt in the empire over the capability and continued viability of the enitre K't'inga-class line. Such doubts were alleviated when the High Council received data on the Federation's own encounter with the V'ger entity, showcasing its immense power. (TOS video game: Klingon Academy)
By the 24th century, this vessel's name had been passed on to the IKV Amar, also of the K't'inga-class. (TNG video game: Starfleet Command III)
- The Amar was referred to as having the name registry "IKC" in the Star Trek CCG and early versions of the Encyclopedia, although later versions of that reference and other books list it as "IKS". The ship's registry number comes from the Decipher RPG books.
