The IKS Gauntlet was a Klingon starship in Imperial service in the 23rd century. The Gauntlet used a design that was unfamiliar to the Federation. (TOS - Year Five comic: "Issue 13")

History[]

In 2269, the Gauntlet appeared at Starbase 212, up to that point unnoticed. The vessel hailed the starbase, and introduced the Gauntlet, Dev Vo'Qul, and her mission - to bring James T. Kirk to stand trial, then execution, for his crimes against the Klingon Empire. If the Federation refused, the Gauntlet indicated that it was prepared to use a new, experimental warhead, which was recognized by Federation sensors as containing immense amounts of radiation. Kirk agreed to meet with the Klingon in the USS Theseus's transporter room, and, as indicated by Areel Shaw, accepted the legitimacy of the proceeding. After the Klingon has accused Kirk of his crimes against the Empire, Kirk returned to his quarters and began recording a last will and testament, but was beamed to the Gauntlet before he could finish. (TOS - Year Five comic: "Issue 13")

Aboard the Gauntlet, Kirk was subjected to the "endless pain of the burning corridor", and almost killed, before being beamed back to the Theseus after Admiral Koraxi was arrested. It was revealed that the Gauntlet was able to evade detection sensor buoys by using bypass codes provided by Koraxi, in an attempt to get rid of Kirk, who was seen as an obstacle to his illicit medical experiments. After Kirk's rescue, Vo'Qul prepared to detonate his warhead only for Kirk to recognize it as a bluff. At Kirk's order, the assembled Federation fleet fired a wide spread of phaser warning shots with wide burst scanner beams, blinding the Gauntlet, before it could use its warhead. The bluff called, the Gauntlet left the system at warp almost immediately. (TOS - Year Five comic: "Issue 14")
