The IKS Hakkarl (KL-1017) was a D7-class, specifically of the K't'inga-class, Klingon battle cruiser starship in service in the 23rd century. The name means "Vanguard", one of the pieces in the game of klin zha. Hakkarl, originally the first of the K't'inga class ships, was specifically modified to run in multi-vector assault mode on complete automation, controlled from a detachable command ship, the B'rel-class bird-of-prey scout IKS Tazhat.

In 2278, Hakkarl/Tazhat was placed under the command of Captain Kasak sutai Khornezh, who was often given new ships to test before they were given to more "politically sound" captains. Seeking to regain his honor after receiving a humiliating black mark in his record from his earlier service, Kasak had engineered an uprising on the planet Dekkanar in the hopes of gaining the planet for the Empire. Without authorization, Kasak and his hand-picked crew hijacked Hakkarl/Tazhat and travelled to Dekkanar to put their scheme to the test. Kasak had not counted on the fact that one of the ships aiding the evacuation of Federation personnel was the starship Enterprise under the command of James T. Kirk, the ship and captain responsible for Kasak's humiliation.

In battle against the Enterprise, Hakkarl had the upper hand as it was completely run by automation, could devote more power to weapons, and could manuever faster. The battle turned against Kasak when a Klingon squadron, sent to recover Hakkarl, entered the battle against the renegade Kasak, destroying Hakkarl's cloak and damaging its automation system. Beaten, Kasak input one last order to Hakkarl: To destroy Tazhat, effectively blowing its own brains out. The powerless hulk of Hakkarl was then destroyed by the Enterprise.
