A ship named IUES Ashoka was active at sometime after the Andorian Empire and its allies had formed the Interstellar Alliance. In the 2290s, the Ashoka conducted an orbital survey of the planet 40 Eridani A-II, inhabited by the brutal and savage but also telepathic "Eridanians". Previously, the planet had been visited by the IUES Ravis.

The Ashoka found evidence of nuclear war and multiple impact sites. Before the Ashoka left UGC 36A-2B in 2292, a duck blind base was established on the prewarp world. Ashoka dropped a team of scientists and security personnel off at the new base. These included Doctor Amanda Grayson of Earth, Doctor Tornellen Dax of Trill, and Ensign Demora Sulu of Andor.
The Ashoka conducted an orbital survey of 40 Eridani A-II, finding evidence for a nuclear war with multiple impact sites. The ship also dropped off a team of scientists and security personnel, including Doctor Amanda Grayson and Tornellen Dax, and Ensign Demora Sulu, to learn more about the "Eridanians".
