He was a personal friend of entrepreneur Rod Portlyn, and in 2376, had the Starfleet Corps of Engineers starship USS da Vinci assigned to assist Portlyn in the development of a joint industrial and research center on the planet Vemlar. Adair also intervened, on Portlyn's behalf, when da Vinci Captain David Gold started investigating some of the businessman's questionable actions in the Norvel system, eventually dispatching the USS Enterprise to intercept and stop Gold's investigations.
