The impulse coil is a part of the impulse engine system used on various starships.

As the Dulcinea was traveling through a wormhole in 2268, the impulse coil was one of the many ship systems that was damaged. Cervantes Quinn wanted to fix the impulse coils after he had repaired the thrusters. (VAN - Declassified novella: The Stars Look Down)
