Summary[]
Ensign Pavel Chekov is on routine duty in auxiliary control aboard the USS Enterprise, when suddenly the ship lurches off course, and out of control. Chekov attempts to contact the bridge but cannot get a response, but discovers that the Enterprise is in danger of being destroyed by a black star.
Chekov manages to make his way to the bridge, where he finds that Captain James T. Kirk and the senior staff are unconscious, and the navigator is seriously hurt. With the Enterprise only seconds away from destruction, Chekov manages to plot a course out of the star. Realizing that Chekov has just saved the ship, Captain Kirk assigns Chekov to bridge duty as navigator, while the primary navigator is recovering in sickbay.

According to this story, Chekov joined the Enterprise crew just before TOS episode: "A Taste of Armageddon". However, The Janus Gate establishes that he was a crewmember at least prior to TOS episode: "The Naked Time".
